Throughout the upcoming months I will be working towards making a positive impact. This impact will be on children who are currently within the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. Jackie Enright and I will be raising money with the assistance of a Kingsford High Schools SADD club. With this money we will then buy the necessary equipment to make tie blankets. Once we have made all of the blankets we will then take a trip down to Milwaukee. Delivering these homemade blankets to ill children, we hope to see all of there faces light up with joy and hope, realizing that they are not in there fight alone.
Blog Post #2 What Can Be Learned From Failure
In the article that I had read about genius hour I learned what the teachers want students to accomplish while preforming genius hour projects. Teachers want students to realize that you do you not always have to succeed on your first attempt at something, but rather learn from your mistakes. Within this project students are supposed to learn that taking risks are a positive thing which will help you strive in the future. This idea gives students the ability to become better readers, writers, communicators, and listeners. Students need to learn to become independent and not strictly rely on teachers one hundred percent of the time. Throughout genius hour students will learn to not limit themselves and push their boundaries. This article allowed me to realize that it is okay to not have complete knowledge about everything that will happen throughout my project. That pushing myself to try new things is a good thing. I will take this information and put it to use within my project and go out on the limb to try something new and hopefully have a positive outcome.
Blog Post #3 How Do Geniuses Think
This article discusses what it actually means to be a genius from the authors point of view. The author believes that it is based off of more than just your intelligence level. The definition of genius is someone who is exceptionally intelligent or creative. The author believes that a true genius will look at an issue and rather than just answering in a conventional way they will come up with a number of ways to look at and solve the problem. The shared strategies of geniuses include the methods of looking at problems from different perspectives, making thoughts visible, being productive, forming novel combinations, forcing relationships, thinking in opposites, thinking metaphorically, and being prepared for the chance that a creative accident might occur. My genius hour project encourages me to use some of these methods by causing me to ask questions about what would attract others to my page and make them interested when they first see it. Having and incorporating those thoughts in my blog posts. Seeing different perspectives of people who may visit my site also allows me to create more effective posts that can ultimately result in satisfaction for the people who view my site.
Blog Post #4 What Does a 3-D printer have to do with my Genius Hour Project
The information that Mr. Cowen presented was very smooth and effective. I learned that when you are more comfortable with your project topic the better your presentation will be. Mr. Cowen knew a lot about his topic which made it easier for me to understand what he was telling us and also made him more comfortable while presenting the information. This persuades me to practice my speech and learn more about what my genius project is and what I want to come from it. Mr Cowen used several tools within his presentation including websites, models, slideshow, and a demonstration of the printer. He did a great job with his presentation!
Blog Post #5 "Is Genius Born or Can it Be Learned?"
Clouds purpose in writing this article was to inform people of all of the contributing factors in becoming a genius. Several experts believe that being a genius is simply genetics while others believe that it can be influenced by your surroundings. Cloud gave many different theories about people's beliefs. He believes that becoming a genius requires a combonation of both genetics and your surroundings. He said a genius is made of several different aspects rather than just IQ test scores.
There are many factors that can affect the ability in becoming a genius. It pertains to me academically in that being a genius is not strictly based on how smart you are but rather many other aspects as well. After taking into account of Clouds thoughts I realized how difficult it would be to become a successful genius.
Blog Post #6 STEM Education
The Girls Who Code Closing Computer Science Gender Gap article is very successful thus far. This project is attempting to close the gender gap in the computer science field. The amount of girls who are currently involved in the field of computer science. At this moment compared to the percentage of boys girls only hold eighteen percent of this field. Hence the major gap there has been a club in which girls and boys have come together to change that percent. In order for this project to take off the person who created the club, Hill began to write grants. So far the project has exceeded its wishes and is continuing to prosper. However only the sixth through eighth grade students are the most involved within this project. At any older ages begin to lack interest within the whole idea of the project. Although the students who are involved in closing the computer science gender gap is a small range of age, those who are involved have made a difference, in fact Hill wants younger students to be a part of this project so they continue to be involved within this when they do get older. Throughout the time of the students being in this program they have gained knowledge in the coding along with being brave and sticking by one another.
Blog Post #7 6 Fridays Left!
With the six Fridays left of Genius hour we plan to use our time efficiently. We have gotten the majority of our book written and we are coming to an end. Our book will be impacting others by demonstrating the correct manners that you should follow when talking to others. The proof that we will be using to show our impact is taking a video of use reading to Mrs. Francis's sixth hour class. We hope that through writing this book we can help her students interact with others in a positive and appropriate manner.
Blog Post #8
With the past few weeks I have made great progress. The book is almost completed and I am almost ready to read the book to Mrs. Francis's class. However, I still need to get a few pages written and need to set up a time to read this book. I also need to create a title for this book by the deadline. My genius hour reflection has come along and I have gotten the majority of it complete. I am positive that I can reach the deadline with the time given that I have left.
